"A tribute to the fallen soldiers, as well as a continuation of their spirits to serve for the nation and its people."

Drawing from the definition of Honour and Respect, Gazebo Sanjung and Hormat are designed as contemporary and informative landmarks for Taman Tugu, a 66-acre new urban park amidst the heart of Kuala Lumpur, where people come to play, learn and celebrate under the 'shield of the soldier'.

In response to the competition brief which called for two innovative, iconic and sustainable gazebo designs – one for the active zone and another for the passive zone – as well as the historical context of the site, where adjacent to the park is a statue known as Tugu Negara built to commemorate the soldiers who fought for the country, we hope to instil a sense of gratitude in all users as they spend their leisure times in this sophisticated park. As such, the form of both gazebos is crafted to resemble 'a soldier sheltering us' by juxtaposing vertical and horizontal elements comprised of reinforced concrete sheer walls and slabs as the body (structure) and the shield (roof) of the soldier (gazebo). During the day, skylights on the roofs of these concrete shelters cast rays of light onto the sheer wall which is inscribed with the history of Tugu Negara to enrich the user experience as visitors learn about the event of the war. At night, these structures continue to illuminate the park with solar powered LED lights to ensure the safety of visitors, thus completing the conceptualised design as a soldier protecting its people.

The proposed schemes also seek to reach new heights in gazebo designs by reimagining the typology and functionality. A tiered L-shaped seating is introduced to make full use of the gazebo by offering flexible sitting preferences that encourage different groups of users to enjoy the gazebo without feeling intruding or intruded by one another. Working with a limited 3m x 3m footprint, cantilever roofs are adopted to create additional sheltered spaces. A swing is added under this extended space of Gazebo Sanjung to enrich its programs. Where necessary, nets can be added to provide additional seats or to serve as a play structure. For Gazebo Hormat, functionality is diversified by the metal louvres which not only serve as an enclosure for joggers and cyclists to rest and dock their bikes, but also as information boards for the park and story boards to learn about the soldiers.
